How do you switch from Checkout Classic to Checkout Modern?

A woman kneeling on one knee plugs a large plug into a wall socket; the cable leads to a laptop showing an online shop front with a striped awning.

Paysera Checkout currently comes in two versions: Classic and the new Modern. Classic keeps working as usual for existing clients, while Modern charges no Paysera commission when your customers pay via online banking.

Switching from Checkout Classic to Checkout Modern means creating a new project, replacing your integration, and directing your payments to it once it is activated. Your existing project does not turn into a Modern one on its own, but we can copy some of its settings. You will set up the integration with the new credentials yourself.

Below, you will find out whether your shop can already switch, what to leave unchanged until the new project is activated, what to prepare in advance, and how to switch in 7 steps.

If you are new to accepting payments online, start with our article “How to accept payments in an online shop”.

Why switch to Checkout Modern?

Checkout Modern is the new Checkout version for businesses registered in Lithuania, Latvia, and Estonia. Compared with Classic, it offers the following benefits:

  • Online banking payments with a 0% Paysera commission: Classic charges 0.50–0.90%.
  • A separate self-service portal: you can see the status of every payment in real time.
  • Split payments to several recipients: the amount a customer pays can be automatically divided, for example, between you and a partner or supplier, so that each receives their share.

Fees are valid as of October 2026. You can find the latest fees on our fees page.

Can your shop switch already?

It depends on which plugin or integration you use. You can already switch if you use a Paysera plugin on WooCommerce, PrestaShop, OpenCart, or Shopify, or if you built your own integration. With a plugin, you replace the Classic plugin with the Modern one; your own integration will need to be rebuilt following the Checkout Modern specification.

Hold off on switching for now if:

  • your shop runs on Magento – the Checkout Modern plugin for it is still in development;
  • you accept recurring payments (subscriptions) – Modern does not support them yet;
  • your shop runs on another company’s platform (a website builder, booking system, or marketplace) – the platform itself handles the switch.

In these cases, keep accepting payments through Checkout Classic. We will let you know once Checkout Modern supports Magento and recurring payments.

What should you know before switching?

Note the following:

  • Do not close your Checkout Classic project or change its website verification before you switch. The old project keeps accepting payments until you connect your website to Modern.
  • The Checkout Classic and Modern plugins cannot run on one website at the same time, and you can accept payments through the new project only once it is activated. That is why it is best to replace the plugin at a quiet time, when your shop gets the fewest orders.
  • You can only refund earlier payments from your Classic project, so do not close it while you may still need to make refunds.

What should you prepare before you start?

You do not need to set up card payments now: you can request them later in your Checkout Modern project.

You do not have to set up the new project from scratch. We can create it based on your Checkout Classic project – email us at [email protected]. We will copy:

  • the project name, description, and policies;
  • your websites, together with their verification;
  • the main client support contact;
  • the payout account;
  • the logo.

We do not copy credentials, integration settings, payment method settings, or payment history.

The new project will appear as a draft: you then check that the details are correct and update anything that has changed. In this case, you do not need to create it or verify your website yourself – you will only need to connect Checkout Modern to your shop with the new credentials and submit the project for review.

How to switch to Checkout Modern: 7 steps

Create and manage your Checkout Modern project in Paysera online banking. If we created the project for you based on your existing one, start from step 3.

  1. Open the Checkout section and create a new project by filling in the requested details.
  2. Verify your website.
  3. Copy your Client ID and Client Secret from the project’s Integrations tab.
  4. Install the Checkout Modern plugin and enter your Client ID and Client Secret. If you built your own integration, rebuild it following the Modern specification instead.
  5. In the project actions menu (⋮), choose Enable Test Mode and make a test payment.
  6. Click Submit for review. We will then either activate the project or send it back with comments.
  7. Once the project is activated, switch your payments to it.

Frequently asked questions

Will my Checkout Classic project be switched off?

No, it will not be switched off automatically. Until you switch, it keeps accepting payments, and after the switch it stays in your account: you will see your earlier payment history there and can refund customers for purchases made through Checkout Classic.

Can I refund customers for payments received through Checkout Classic?

Yes, but only from your Classic project, so do not close it while you may still need to refund customers.

Will I need to enter my project details again?

Not necessarily. We can create the Modern project based on your existing one and copy some of its settings, but you will set up the integration with the new credentials yourself.

Will my payout account change?

If we create the Modern project based on your existing one, we copy your payout account from the Classic project. If you create the project yourself, you choose the payout account while setting it up.

Checkout Modern lets you accept payments via online banking with no Paysera commission, but you can only switch to it by creating a new project. Before you start, check whether your shop can switch already, and keep your Classic project running until the new one is activated – it is also where you will refund earlier payments.
